"Don’t leave, you might miss something!" a mischievous Albert Garcia often tells audiences. Garcia, band leader and jokester of the intentionally misspelled Suprize Package and the host at a number of San Antonio jam sessions, keeps audiences entertained with upbeat, risqué humor and a versatile musical package that ranges from rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, reggae, and blues to jazz.
Voted San Antonio’s number one saxophone player in 1993 by readers of The Current and S. A. Magazine, Garcia has 35 years experience as a vocalist and musician. He has played with a variety of name acts, including The Johnny Copeland Band, Bo Diddley, and Clifford Scott, and opened shows for Santana, James Cotton, Al Stewart, the Wailers, and Pato Banton, among others.
Boasting a big, bold sound reminiscent of Junior Walker, A. C. Reed, and the late King Curtis, riff master Garcia jumps into songs and lays horn parts with ease, skill and precision. When it is time to solo, he captures listeners with interesting, jazz-influenced melodic lines that are always reaching, and never boring.
Suprize Package personnel — drummer Ruben Hernandez, guitarist/synth guitarist/vocalist Jay Martinez, bassman Pete Ojeda, and keyboard player Gene Villarreal — may change from performance to performance, due to availability of the players, who sometimes gig with other local bands. But no matter who is playing with Garcia on a given night, audiences can expect an energized performance. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes to dance the night away, and don’t leave — you might miss something.
